I was born into such a shitty family that every weekend was my parents getting drunk and yelling at each other while we kids tried to play video games and try not to cry. I didn't even get to go to kindergarten because parents didn't give enough shits to go through the motions of putting me there. Also, I refused to eat anything but sandwiches and my deadbeat parents were happy to oblige because I could make them myself. So in elementary school I had next to no social skills, I was fat, had no friends and got into trouble regularly, usually for weird behavior like throwing stuff at the other kids for no good reason. My parents never beat me for it, but the scoldings hurt like hell because they were some of the only people in my social circle in addition to my siblings. I had a secular upbringing but sometimes I thought my parents were God, like they were some holy duality and I had made them fight each other by acting up at school. I often cried myself to sleep.

When I was 14, there was a talk about how drugs are bad mmkay. Naturally my reaction was to go find some and while I had no luck trying to score any, I did find some magic mushrooms (semis) by following an internet guide.

I dried and ate them like the guide told and when the shrooms kicked in, I completely broke down. It was the first time I actually understood that life shouldn't be like it was. Before the night was over the despair had turned into motivation to leave the shitshack I called home. I had never experienced motivation either before the trip.

Make of it what you will, but I think there's definitely more to psychedelics than just "getting high".
