When I think it's appropriate. Usually a few thou or so out of my annual charity budget goes to something that helps people somewhat directly.

I give a dollar or two to the homeless. It might go towards drugs or alcohol, but these people aren't going to help themselves anyways, so I'll at least help them have a few hours of joy.
