The Phalanx needs side protection from shield men or polearm/axe men. It's was also the "anvil" with with Alexander would use his cavalry as a "hammer." You need that "hammer"f force to drive and corral the enemy into the phalanx. Antifa has been using this tactic. Themselves being the hammer and the police being the anvil.

Alternatively you could use the classic "pincer" and just attack from both sides of their mob.
