not that simple, season 1 was monster of the week, the rest went to power creep and world building. seaspn 9 and 10 had a very different tone due to it starting out as a different show. All the tech that they had in latter seasons you can point to an episode(s) where it was discovered or developed. You really get to feel like you are watching the growth of a space-faring civilization, so when they finally get to making these advanced ships, you can look at them and see all the inspiration from previous ships, all the histories and backstories of all the different reactors, weapons, and even down to the metal the ships are made from.

Get a trained "rag tag" group together - a soldier, a scientist, an off-worlder and a diplomat-archetype and send them to other planets to make allies and enemies and discover new technology along the way. This is the formula they had to stick with, and then Universe came along and fucked it all up with spending 25 minutes on people "reconnecting with their loved ones" using the black stones.

It was a logical evolution for the show; but if any series is in need of a reboot its Stargate. By the end the show just had too much baggage and it had nowhere left to go except to turn into Star Trek and just leave the gates behind.

In my opinion the show was at its best in the first few seasons before they had any spaceships when they were fighting the Goau'ld the best they could with machine guns and rocket launchers.

It's honestly amazing.
You can start with the original Stargate movie if you want. After that it's Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and then if you want to ruin it all, Universe.
It's one hell of a wild ride overall. I think Stargate SG-1 seasons 6 or 7 were quite bad, simply because of the funding being 0 for a time, but it's not completely horrible.

The only real threat in the Milky way is the Lucien Alliance, which is a collection of piratefags running around in Goa'uld ships. Wraith aren't much of an issue since most of them are stuck in their own galaxy and fighting amongst themselves. The other thing is that most humans are carriers of the Hoffan virus, so the Wraith are SOL anyway.
