they were freemasons who were required to believe in a higher power in order to humble themselves and many were deists. there's an abridged version of the bible which only includes things jesus actually said and it's fifty something pages long; it was written by one of the founding fathers. the entire country was created by immigrants fleeing religious persecution under despotic monarchies and the constitution was a response to that. the founding fathers hated inherited wealth/power and knew that people were the problem, not the government system. checks and balances was designed to prevent people from abusing their power, but those require constant refreshment as smart, powerful people will find loopholes.

The idea of a separation of church and state is a recent idea. There is certainly a prohibition on state sanctioned religion, but religion was expected to inform the individual of morality and it was taken for granted that the individual would take that with him when he preformed his civic duties.

What we see now is a failure of culture. See, culture is ment to instill the principles of a society into the members so that the whole will share the same values. The culture will then prove the quality of itself and history can judge.

These days we aren't even discussing what values are best, but if there are any standards to be had at all.

They varied. Jefferson for instance really liked the moral message of Christianity, but didn't care for the supernatural parts of it, so he went and edited the Jeffersonian Bible. He took all parts where Jesus performed miracles, was resurrected, and possessed a divine nature and removed them. He also wrote Notes on the State of Virginia where flat-out stated that blacks and whites could not successfully live together.

He pretty much prophesied exactly what we are seeing today with identity politics. Multicultural democracies always fail because it eventually turns into competing ethnic groups trying to monopolize the resources of the group to their own benefit, at the detriment of others.

Both. It is factually correct that America is supposed to have a separation of church and state, and it is also factually correct that America was founded on Christian principles and morals.
