Oh, I completely agree. We never went to a place with an english menu, various country flags advertised outside, or pictures of the food advertised outside. We looked for hole in the places that wouldn't understand a lick of english.

In Rome we mostly ate in and around the Jewish ghetto and west of the Tiber. Don't get me wrong, the food was fantastic; just that Turino restaurants were tastier (we also only saw one other English couple in Turino in the entire 5 days we were there, while in Rome it was half tourists.)

Riomaggiore and Vernazza in cinque terre had some of the best seafood I've ever had as well.

Largely depends on the "interpretation" of the law performed by the judge that has to rule if the case is self defense.
