Dutch and German used to be recognised as the same language by both the Dutch and the Germans until our golden age, only then did we start to call our language Nederduits and later Nederlands.

This doesn't mean that the languages changed a lot, not in that sense. When looking at dialects of today, dialects from near the border are closer to each other than from the other side of the country. It's not a hard line.
When the language was standardised in both countries, the drift started to happen. Assuming the languages weren't the same would be pretty strange looking at history. It takes awhile for languages to divert naturally, and that only really could have happened after ~900AD. The standardisation destroyed a lot but also achieved a lot towards unifying its respective people.

Even today, dialects still cross borders.
