I'm not even sure the romans used "black" to describe what we now describe as "black people". It's a very broad word.

When describing the three candidates for Emperor, the Historia Augusta says the following:

"Best is the Dark One (Niger), the African good (Severus), but the worst is the White One (Albinus)."

"Both of the Black and the White shall the life-blood be shed all untimely;
Empire over the world shall be held by the native of Carthage (Severus)."

So "black" and "African" aren't even synonymous.

They may have. Ethiopian was the most common. It means burnt-face.
Africa, in this time period, refers specifically to the former core territory of the Carthaginian Empire. The Arabs in the 700s are the ones who apply it to the continent.
