Eugenics is the future, and it won't go away. As long as the embryo has no nervous system yet, it can't feel pain, it can't suffer and it isn't conscious. You should push and embrace it for certain cases and make a hardline for not aborting fetusses after a certain month were some basic conciousness is reached.
The slippery slope is real but we cant stand on the top of the mountain either as this means to force people to put up with downies. Just embrace perpetual struggle about not sliding down too much, for that I value the religious people greatly even if I disagree with them wholeheartely.

I'm amused at the appalled tone of the article.
My wife and I are expecting our second child. They've developed a test a few years ago that analyses the blood of the mother and can tell with 99.99% certainty whether or not the child has down syndrome or not. At both instances we had the test done 6 weeks into the pregnancy. Almost immediately after finding out my wife was pregnant. And I was told the test could be done much sooner.
This is fantastic! What an age we live in.
We've had it done for both pregnancies, the test costs 300 euros and is paid back in full by health care. Which makes sense in comparison to what it would cost in health care subsidies taking care of a down syndrome person for an entire lifetime.
I'm not sure whether or not health care covers subsequent abortion if the test comes back positive for down syndrome but since the existence of the test, with its accuracy and how soon in the pregnancy it can be executed, almost all women/couples choose to abort in case of down syndrome.

I for one support the practice in full. I see nothing but benefits to this.

I don't doubt that most parents learn to love their down syndrome child and support it as much as they can.
But have that thought really sink in for a second. The moment you realize your son or daughter will always rely on others to help it out throughout their entire lives. Financial costs and hospital bills aside, think of the amount of heartache both you and your child will have to go through due to the sole fact of their condition.
Then you're told it's so early in the pregnancy, it's as easy as taking a single pill to terminate the embryo.
You wouldn't at least consider it?
