Let me give you one example:
Beginning 2000 we had a very talented right wing politician that came out of a blind spot of the establishment called Pim Fortuyn. He was the target of some very serious threats with multiple incidents all stemming from the left. He was well on his way to become the next prime minister of the Netherlands only months away from elections when he was shot in the streets after giving a radio interview. The murderer was a far left guy: Folkert van der Graaf. That guy, that left wing literal Antifa tier murderer is now already back in our streets sipping tomato juices in Amsterdam after serving 12 years of his 18 year sentence. Hes unfit for work due to his 'famousness' so the Dutch taxpayer are paying for his tomato juices.
Let this be a warning to you Americans what happens when you allow the left to commit political crimes and not bring the full force of the law down upon them. I have much respect for the American nation, and I sincerely hope your judges still have a bit more sense in them than their Western European counterparts.

Note that all it takes to murder a good man who could run for office and help positively change lives is someone willing to sit in prison for a little over a decade.

We need to have harsh punishments for anyone harming those seeking office, in addition to intense scrutiny of those running for office.

This is correct. But also be aware that Pim Fortuyn had lesser incidents and political threats that were not prosecuted before he eventually got murdered by the left. Those incidents were much like what you see in the US now where the left feels emboldened enough to strike with violence at people with opinions they do not agree with. If you do not come down hard on this, it will embolden them more: the next state is actual political murder.
