That attitude is not just on the Bulgarian side, it's the whole Balkan peninsula. Everybody has had enough of the muslims - just look at our history. We were pretty much neutral in both World Wars at first, though.
As we were a young country which had gone through a couple of wars, we were avoiding any more of them and focusing on recovery instead. Both sides were lusting after us, because we had a bretty big army and a strategic location, but the Entente fucked up their negotiation (as we also desired more land, but Serbia was not willing to give it). So we joined Germany, Austro-Hungaria and the Ottomans (!!!) and forcibly took the land we wanted, while also helping our allies.
However, we eventually lost. We gave up the land from Serbia that we had taken, and he had to give even more of our land. We handed a lot of land over, our army got reduced to a measly 20000, and we had a serious debt.
In WWII, we stayed neutral in the beginning yet again. We wanted to reclaim some of the land we had lost before without shedding blood, and to be honest, we actually managed negotiating with Romania and took some of Dobrudja.
But then the nazis came and DEMANDED that we let them pass so they can go to Greece. We were basically forced into joining them, but at the time, that didn't seem like that bad of an idea, as Hitler hadn't turned against Russia yet. It seemed like we were joining the winning side. We could've taken some of the land we had lost earlier, too - and so we did. It didn't last for long, though.
In 1944, the Russians entered our territory, seized our port cities, and turned us into gommies ;_;. We had to fight against the Axis, our former allies in the last year of the WWII.
But well.. at least we got to keep Dobrudja after WWII, so that was nice.

Seriously though, you'd find a lot of other balkan people on here, too - it's fun talking with people with a similar mindset.
Oh, and by the way, the average young person could care less about learning English. We have to learn one mandatory Western language in school - it's almost always English, but a lot of people have learned German instead. We also tend to learn Russian as a second language (but French and Spanish are a choice, too). At the end, they might've not learned much at all.
The kids sometimes integrate English words in their slang, but they never really go beyond that.

You can assume that the people on here that speak decent English had some kind of passion for it - they either spent a lot of time on English sites, played games, or viewed media in English.

I don't really think I can. Where exactly are you going to work, exactly? I don't promise anything (as I'm from a rural area in the southeast, and I haven't really been around my own country - I'm boring!) but another Bulgarian ITT might see that and recommend you a nice place.
I don't know whether you'll be visiting these or not, but try to avoid resorts - you'll be ripped off. They're not really interesting, either - they usually look like any other resort in the world. There's almost nothing original here. I can't really talk about the people there - but you'd probably know type of person spends their days at those kinds of resorts. All they're really good for is for finding girls that are easy to fuck.
Again, I prefer rural Bulgaria; I just hate seeing buildings and buildings for miles - that's just how I am. There's a lot of dark spots that are great for astronomy buffs like me, and I like hiking in the mountainous areas near the Rhodopes - I'm a hobbyist photographer so I get a decent opportunity to take some decent shots, too.
I'm sorry if I bored you to hell, but really, the Rhodopes are pretty beautiful - and so are the Rila mountains. It would be a pretty nice change of scenery for somebody who presumably has spent most of their time in a city.
