What went wrong?

He didn't plan ahead.
I love him for trying but hate him for failing.
He was scared of commitment and had premarital sex all his life.
Basing your reich on the roman empire and then getting divided and conquered.

he was probably the shittiest strategist in WW2... As a slav I'm obviously glad he failed but damn the more I learn about WW2 the more I'm surprised how after so many mistakes he still didn't let his military commanders do the decisions.

Underestimating the Soviet soldiers. Literally bit off more than he could chew.
Was there really any chance of winning when you are going against whole world with Italy and Japan as allies?
There was German propaganda saying that East Europe needed to be liberated from Bolshevism.
Eastern Nationalists were stimulated by this, they were looking forward to this liberation.
They were there to genocide subhumans and then recolonise.

Yes, ww1 was brutal on Western wealth.

>What went wrong?
He attacked the USSR.

Bolshevism would have taken all of Europe, they needed to be attacked.

He didn't have 500 50MT hydrogen bombs built by 1936 to drop on anyone opposing him
That was the biggest problem
He didn't expect the British and the Americans to give half of Christian Europe to the Alt Left mongolian savages.
Never trust a greedy Anglo with a bag full of shekels not to sell out his own people.
Protip: Hitler did nothing wrong.
Stay scared JIDF
This will always be a blood and honour board.

Fundamentally, his hubris.
But also, he was an unmarried, drug-addicted degenerate with no sense of reality and many personality flaws.
Reading any account of WWII is frustrating because of all the easily avoidable mistakes directly attributable to Hitler's inability to recognize he might be wrong about a choice when confronted by his underlings. Another serious flaw was that he would believe his own propaganda or the sugar coated lies his underlings would often tell him (he genuinely thought the British were on the verge of destruction). This lead him to make several mistakes in the many different war theaters.
Of course, Hitler wasn't the only one with these flaws (Mussolini was probably worst with regards to their total disconnection with reality), but Hitler was the war leader of the strongest country in the Axis and he had unprecedented power of decision, whereas the other warmongers such as Churchill often had a whole democratic and military apparatus to check their own follies (Stalin excluded).
Why did the Axis attack the Soviet Union when its Luftwaffe had been badly damaged during the battle of Britain? Why did they attack when half their logistics relied on horses? Why did they go for Baku when they didn't even have the tanker fleet to bring back any oil? Why split and give the army three objectives in a single campaign when attacking the East? Why promise the Japanese to declare war on the US? Was opening a front in Asia worth dragging the greatest industrial power in to the war? Why forbid your armies from retreating against overwhelming enemies in Africa and in Eastern Europe? Etc.
Of course, you might say it's easy with insight to criticize those decisions, but Hitler was advised against the many great mistakes of the war by his staff. Either they were ignored and their loyalty to him got them to obey, or he replaced them with yes-men.

If that's the case, why was the USSR Hitler's closest ally (intelligence exchange, weapons & resources shipment, Poland splitting, recognition of each other's conquests, etc.) from 1939 to 1942?
You can't claim moral high ground after you have shaken hands with the devil.

To be honest, you can't blame German overengineering on Hitler.
