As for why they kept the nogs, it was because of the climate. Europeans brought Africans in because indian wars were killing off potential labourers and the climate discouraged large-scale European settlement. Africans were thought to do better in such humidity and heat, which is why so many thousands were bought from Jews and Arabs and brought to the American South and Caribbean.

It is what it is. The generation of American Southerners fighting for independence and the generation of Americans today aren't at fault for people buying Africans to work in a hot, humid hellhole.

All of the "cotton machines" were invented long before the Civil War. They were in fact the impetus behind the Industrial Revolution because they freed up a lot of the labour previously required for agricultural goods, which the rural-urban migration.

Capturing and buying human beings is a significant expense. Owning a slave was roughly equivalent to owning a sports car though it was economical en masse because free labor on vast plantations.
