I can point you in the right direction. Mercantile exchanges and futures are not new. They were around back then as well. The southern plantations would take loans from banks, all located or headquartered in the north, on which the banks would take collateral for the plantations yield. The banks would fuck around with cotton/tobacco futures and consistently, some say intentionally, fuck things up.

The plantations would end up being able to repay the original loans, but since banks tied the repayment number to mercantile futures, the plantations would end up owing more than they originally had. The only way to pay back the now outstanding balance was to take another loan and try for a better yield and futures market next year. Rinse and repeat.

The southern plantations, as a result, were universally underwater and controlled by nother banks. The big, main, primary reason for secession was that when the states became independent, the southern plantations debt was wiped out. It wasn't about slavery. Only 4% owned slaves the vast majority of men voted for secession anyway which was legal at the time thanks to the 10th amendment.

Before this taxes were levied against agricultural goods but not manufactured goods this had been going on for years. This hurt the average southern farmer and by 1860 another major tax was being debated in congress. This was the average mans motivation.

Then came Fort Sumter Union soldiers took the fort and aimed the guns at the city refusing to leave. Lincoln sent a few ships of men to help hold the fort but before they could arrive Southern Militia bombarded the fort and took it.

The South saw this as an aggressive action from the North and it rallied them to defend the south from what they saw as northern aggression.
