It worked when every couple was having 5 kids and people lived an average of 6-7 years after the age of 65. Now people live much longer and have fewer kids. We're fucked. Technically speaking, unless the law changes, Social Security is legally prohibited from going into default. It does this by automatically adjusting the payouts based on what the program takes in. So sometime in the early 2030s, the primary Social Security Trust Fund will run out of reserves. From there, they payouts will not legally be allowed to exceed tax collections into Social Security.
