As I understand it a big stickler was the Treaty of Trianon, forced upon Hungary after the First World War. Hungary lost like 2/3 of its land and millions of ethnic Hungarians to other states. Romania got a huge portion of Hungarian Transylvania. To this day, there is still a significant Hungarian population in the szekely land. (Majority in some parts)
I'm not certain what has affected modern-Day relations, but I certainly know that the Hungarian minority is a concern.

The carpatians were the natural border, Hungarian for centuries - and not to forget 500k Germans used to settle in transsylvania for 800 years.
