I don't think there's a 'secret' beyond staying calm and not being stupid. I've gone into unfamiliar woods many times without a compass (mushroom hunter) and never got lost like this. Mostly I use the sun as a guide, and if it's an overcast day and I get turned around, I just try to get to a low elevation. Invariably, there will be a creek bed I can follow. It might not be straight, but I won't walk in circles that way.

A couple other things- I think it's amazing that she ate and drank. Without a water filter, pretty much any water source that isn't a spring is going to make you deathly ill, and even I don't try to identify mushrooms and berries to eat in the field. She's either incredibly lucky or lying.

Last thing- I don't think she even tanned that much. I think she was dark to begin with and used makeup to make her skin look light.
