it's a clean slate rewrite of the entire modern technology stack since the 70s. it's quite hard to explain to people and you basically need a phd to understand all of it, but basically system software like UNIX which is the foundation of a lot of our computing was created before the internet existed, so it was not designed with it in mind and as a result we've been building on extremely shaky foundations ever since which leads to all kinds of retarded outcomes due to the fact that we can't get away from the client/server model because distributed programming was too hard. the contention is basically that the internet as we know it is a failure which basically halted in 2008 and has been stagnant ever since because of this problem. Urbit has refactored everything and built a new (extremely weird) simple stack that combines routing address with your network identity. just to give an example, daily stormer wouldn't be able to have their DNS stolen if everyone was using Urbit. mark zuckerberg wouldn't own your data because you would serve your own data. youtube can't shut you down because your videos exist on your urbit and that is serving your videos to people, rather through some censorious progressive intermediary. the end result will be everyone on earth has a very easy to use general purpose server that they can use for anything they want. it's designed to be a new foundation to build on top of.
