It was a beautiful mountain and they should have never been allowed to deface it like they did. It reminds me of how they chop off mountains in WV for coal and they spray paint the tops green. I've actually been to stone mountain with some black friends of mine. There were far more black people there than white, and most of them were just happy to be out getting some exercise, walking on the trails up to the top. I went to see it in 1972 when I was 10 years old, after it was finally finished.

There is some interesting history to this monument. In the early 20's, Henry Cabot Lodge was the Democratic Senator from Massachusetts. He introduced a bill to Congress to mint a .50¢ piece, with Lee & Jackson, to find the carving of the relief. The Ladies Memorial Association of Atlanta is the group that originated the idea of this monument to begin with. They contracted Gutzon Borglum to carve the relief. After many years of dealing with him, huge amounts of money being wasted, and the fact he was a total Dick to deal with, they fired him. He then went on to carve Mount Rushmore. The Stone Mountain Relief was finally finished in 1972.

I own an original 1922 book, Stone Mountain, an Epic Poem by Lucian Lamar Knight. When I received the book, it included an original promotional pamphlet.
