I live in Tokyo part time. I'm fairly social so I will talk to some white people when my gf and I go out drinking. Most of the people who have it miserable are the ones working at Eikaiwa, which is the bottom tier of schools. I've been to Japan one year when I was a student, saw plenty of "English teachers" around, many of them were not even from English speaking countries.

From what I've seen it looks like a very poor career choice. No job security, almost no saving for retirement, and you can be liquidated as soon as you hit 40, to be replaced by a younger "teacher".

Most white people in Japan stick together. Especially Brits, Aussies, and Americans. Then you will have the French and Italians. They go to these shitty pubs and whine about everything. Half of them act like they are fluent in Japanese but can't carry a conversation that doesn't have anything to do with themselves.

Most people are not here for an actual job. They want a hand-me-out job. Well, most students here today are too busy to spend a lot of time on English study so the teachers teach little children. It's pathetic. Short-term English teacher by day, desperate-for-sex-with-anything-that-moves gaijin by night. People think that being a 4/10 gaijin will get them an 9/10 jpn boy/girlfriend. In actuality it will give them a 5/10 jpn boy/girlfriend maybe. Half of the time though it is actually some unhappy housewife with a husband who is at work all of the time.

Then those that do find *love* find out that the wife cuts sex from their lives after marriage and takes the children away and controls the bank account. And once the expat man-child/woman-child gets fat/watches tv/plays video games all day - they head for a divorce and get sent back to their home country.

After all that happens, they have kids in Japan being raised by an actually responsible jpn person and brag to their friends in (foreign country) about how they banged 10/10 jpn all day when they were there.

It's so funny... the young men too often don't know Japanese and end up with Koreans/Thai/Chinese... or especially Pinoys... or sometimes half-Japanese. Often they end up with hostesses and pay tens of thousands of yen.

Here's what happened to me.

I am not an English teacher. But I am someone who has to work with foreigners all of the time. It's sad. It's miserable. And I really really really try to help them out. People think that all English teachers are just sad nerdy pasty men. It's not true. Actually there are women too and a great variety of English teachers. I actually helped a black woman to marry a Japanese once.

So many though come here like colonists. The worst are the British/Aussies. They think that they own the whole of Asia still. It's ridiculous. I want to tell them to teach English in Thailand or something because no one wants them here. They all want it their way.

I have met a well-educated American man (Oregon) who worked at a Japanese university and married a nurse. He is a very industrious man who never gave up on his Japanese fluency and works as hard as a "good" immigrant. He carries sacred shrines during matsuri (festivals) and is very respected. I don't know if he can handle actually becoming Japanese but he is well-liked. I know he is a permanent resident now. I helped him to find his job actually.

But a few years ago I saw an entire group of English teachers quit a respectable school. They all came in late to work, were partying constantly, whining in English constantly, and did not respect any authority. I'd rather hire South Asians to teach English. Japan is changing and I'm sure that the salary for these hand-me-out teaching jobs from the 80s are going down to near-minimum wage levels in UK.

Used to post from Japan when I was working there. My favourite pass-time was bullying Chinks and Skoreans because they're the worst asians and they damn well know it, which is why they envy Japan so much.

Mind you, I'm not too fond of nips either, so many of them are passive aggressive and won't be honest even after you confront them after catching them red-handed. Seems to be more of an issue with the young and business-y types but old men can be dishonest cunts too if they think you're American or not respectful enough.

I work for a financial research institute in Tokyo (will not name for obvious reasons) and am one of two white people on my floor.
I'm doing my best to integrate and things are going relatively well. It's been 4 years now and I still get the wariness around foreigners - stares on trains, etc. - but I can hold conversations fairly well and only need to get the dictionary out a couple of times a week. Japanese people are very welcoming once they realise they won't need to attempt English communication, and even more so when they realise you're taking the whole thing seriously.
I honestly don't remember the last time I had any trouble here, but that being said I don't wander around Roppongi or Shinjuku late on a Friday night.
As for interaction with other English people, I try to avoid it. Most outsiders give us a bad name because they don't know how to behave. If I'm out with coworkers and my one close white friend, we'll speak only Japanese. Making an effort here goes a long, long way.

I haven't met many Aussies, but I have had the same experience with the Brits. It's a weird superiority complex combined with anti-western posturing. Its quite bazaar. I, like so many westerners, wanted to go to Japan, but I didn't want to be a low-wage prole for my whole life. I chose China for pay and opportunities for real career progression. It's too bad Japan is so attractive that is has been oversaturated with bums, and economic leftovers to the point that not even a PhD can get a professorship at one of Japan's hundreds of universities. I saw Brittish tourists in Gatlinburg once. Security was making them leave for public drinking on the parking lot. The chicks were wearing bra tops or tank tops and had tattoos, and the men had hawaii shirts. One of them was covered in hula dancers. The super drunk one finally got hauled off when he unzipped and started pissing.
I remember it quite well because it was the first time that I as a young lad had ever heard a British accent or seen a man's dong.

This is very true, there is a lot of focus on japan here and establishing connections there because nips are in love with Scandinavia for some reason. However because Asia is like it is. They try to establish connections with Japanese immigrants and hope to establish an export to japan.
It is very common for companies here to export to nearby countries as in Scandinavia and Germany, but then also to japan. high end design companies thrive on the Japanese consumer.

And it's not just BS, here are some companies: Flying Tiger of Copenhagen, Montana Furniture's, Ilse Jacobson, and so on. It's shitty companies but nips love em....
