So I figured this was the best place to ask.
Why do non-binary people go by they and them when that is a plural pronoun and they are still one person. I know they think they have two or no genders but they only have one body, one identity.
I tried looking this up on google already but not only do I get no answer, I also get a lot of wrong information cited by barley credible sources

Okay so they made that shit up and forced wiki to make a page. Why would anyone want to use a plural pronoun for their new gender.

>"It" had negative connotations
>English lacks neutral term (unlike other European languages)
>"They" is reminiscent of royal "we" (indirectly)

Because they're mentally defective.

It gives them the illusion of control in social situations.
They enter the situation forcing you to play a game that you are not interested in playing, because you know that it is ultimately irrelevant. They set these basic rhetorical ground-rules which they deem are not to be violated, and then proceed to attempt to beat you over the head with a moral truncheon if you forget the rules of the game.
It is the way of a coward, an idiot pretend-victim, to control a conversation. Anyone who truly believed what they were saying or felt comfortable with the situation would not be so desperate for this level of control.

The use of they as a singular pronoun has been around since the 14th century.

English teacher here, they/them has always been used in English when we don't know if the subject is masculine/feminine singular/plural.
Eg: whoever was here before us needs to come back soon, they've left the place in a total mess.
