Because of the denazification after the war. The allied burned millions of books and destroyed thousands of statues, anything that would bring pride into the German heart was deemed illegal. You can not imagine the shame that was forced upon German people. It is really a pity. I sometimes speak to German people in Norway, and it is just so sad how confused they get from how we celebrate our national holiday with pride.
