There was no standard until the 2000 election. Tv networks switched between colors each election and often weren't in sync with each other's choices. In 2000 due to the drawn out process, the media started using red state and blue state labels in reference to the ever present electoral college maps. It's simply a fluke that Republicans were red that year. It easily could have been the other way around.
