For me it's more of an issue with people of the present. I don't think flying a confederate flag is alright. It's the flag of a terrorist organization. If people can't accept that the swastika was a former symbol of peace then what good is letting that got still? If they don't want their flags/monuments attacked they should fly while doing the most ducking good that can do. Not crying about taking a statue down. As someone born and raised in the north I think it's less about North and south and more about city vs everywhere else. In the north, unlike the South there is no shared identity with the exception that it is commonly viewed that the north is intellectually and morally superior, there is no true northern loyalty among any one in the cities, they indeed do think they are Superior to the South and non-cities but they have no loyalty or shared identity beyond that.
