The Civil war was about the Power dynamic between two very different societies. The biggest contributions were a fear among southerners that the North had too much power over the agrarian society of the south just with simple majorities in Congress.

Sure, compromises were had such as a slave and free territory would achieve statehood around the same time but it was the North imposing Tarriffs that benefited the North to the detriment to the south that was the real issue. The first issues were in the 50's with the Tariffs of Abomination and this is where "States rights" first actually came into play. Does a state such as South Carolina have sovereignty to "nullify" a law it finds unjust? A question that seems obvious today but this was a huge legal question at the time for the still young Nation. What about the right to peacefully secede?

Yes, slavery was the driving force for the economy of the south but as long as the south was agrarian and the north was industrialized, the animosity would still have existed between the two. If no slaves were ever bought to the United States it is entirely likely a Civil War would still have happened.
