There is, however, a pretty stark divide between Jews and non-Jews when it comes to position and influence. Rather than preserving your in-group identity, Christianity wanted you to convert other people to Christianity. Which meant that they now shared your religion. However, in this case, the whole failure case didn't occur. While Christian bankers weren't really able to continue to function without usury, the Jews were still around. The two saints had basically just handed them a monopoly on the banking sector, and they took it and ran with it. Jews were never really popular among Christians, and this certainly didn't help. The Jewish communities became more and more isolated from larger society, and traveling Jews were more and more likely to stay with their own kind. Networking began to emerge, and, eventually, you ended up with a kind of dispersed nation.
