We had very few railroads, many of which were not even connected together so moving supplies around was strictly by horse carriage. We had no factories. None, nada, zelch, zippo. Making things took time, time that the South couldn't afford.

The North on the other hand had factories, several deposits of ore and minerals, and several trade routes including interconnected railroads. They could move men, supplies, food, whatever, very quickly. An army marches on its stomach after all.

The last bit, and probably the most effective, was the fact the Union set up naval blockades around southern ports. Nothing went in, nothing went out. Nothing. The South made money by selling and exporting cotton to England, but since the naval blockade was a thing, we continued to lose money very rapidly. This was even moreso effective after the North captured New Orleans. We were doomed before the first shot was fired.

The reality is, we were defending our way of life.

The North and South were two different worlds. We had our own values and views. Prior to the Civil War, the dispute over land and borders between the North and South were a constant thing.

Both sides just continued to build up grudges like debt. Adding to that, many top players in the South said they'd secede if Lincoln had won the election. Obviously he won.

Shortly afterwards, Union Soldiers fired upon Fort Sumter and the war unofficially started. The South gained multiple small victories, but we couldn't supply the war effort at all.

Replacing all these statues, removing plaques, and rewriting history will continue to be a thing for several years. This is a massive slap to the face for any American. The Emancipation Proclamation only freed southern slaves, which Lincoln technically had no jurisdiction over at the time.

Lincoln likely would have made an attempt to abolish slavery all together if he could, but the civil war was not about slavery. Depending on who you ask it was States' Rights, or rebellion. Those who say it was over slavery are sadly mistaken, and incorrect.
