I feel the internet is to blame heavily for this new political chaos. Also the expansion of progressivism, feminism, curtailing of free speech, neo nazism, and all around hate. People have an inkling they feel a certain way and The internet reinforces their initial a priori beliefs.

Both sides just live in their extremist online echo chambers where fringe information constantly gets passed around. Tumblr, twitter, lefty facebook is filled with radfem marxist academic rhetoric shit. Conservative circles are filled with Neo-nazi talking points, Alex Jones, etc.
Both sides are constantly told the other side is a bunch of evil heartless retards trying to destroy the country and they only get news that reinforces their beliefs. The internet gives them a circlejerk, confirmation bias, and dubious information that they want to believe but don't look into much further.
