In all honesty, there are terrific role models in anime and manga. A lot of it is about people overcoming impossible odds and becoming overwhelmingly powerful. There are plenty about people honing a craft to perfection, leading others to victory, and outsmarting their opponents. It's great for communicating these ideas to children. Plus, women are portrayed as and encouraged to be traditional and blacks and gays are shit on across the entire medium.
Outside of the japanosphere, there's good role models in some western video games, take Master Chief and Geralt for example. As for books, there's the Horus Heresy. Great inspiration even for grown men
