Heard enough stories about the Nazies and commies of how they occupied my country.
When the nazies came, they would usually sleep in the barns, help around with some very basic work as payment. Such as bring water from the well, carry stuff around, clean up and so on. The most popular payment for food and shelter was chocolate. People didn't trust the nazis, but they would usually come, be straightforward that they need a place to crash and eat and that's it. You didn't really fear that they'd do something bad and they kept to themselves.

The commies came, people would be thrown out of their homes and would need to sleep outside. They would slaughter farm animals for food, or for fun. Rapes were common and after theyd move on, the area would be ruined usually. Asking for payment for letting them stay or eat was basically suicidal.
Obviously there were different cases for each, but this was basically the general experience for most of the old people I talked with about both very different happenings.
And no, nobody really sympathized with either. At the end of the day it was an occupation. It's just that one side werent subhumans.
