Not Anon5. It's called Poisoning the Well. They want the truth to be associated with bad/crazy/dangerous people so even if it is true no one will research it out of fear of being associated with the group that believes it.

A good example is in the Bible where demonically posessed people approached Jesus telling him he is the Christ and the Son of God. Why would demons confirm the identity of their own enemy? So that the truth would be associated with demons, crazy people, and demon posessed people. So if people knew it was true they would not persue it or be associated with those individuals.
