He wasn't just a random non-ideological mercenary, he was selective about who he worked for. He was dedicated solely to fighting against Russian and pro-Russian forces. It was about perceived Soviet Russian imperialism, and Poles continue to view Russian foreign policy the same way today. If he was alive and in his prime today, he would probably be fighting alongside the Free Syrian Army against Assad / Russians in Syria. Maybe he'd be anti-Trump too, like many Polish nationalists today who are alarmed by Trump's pro-Russian statements about Crimea, Putin, etc.
