James Fields Jr., 20, is being held at the Albermarle-Charlottesville County Regional Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, malicious wounding and failure to stop in an accident that resulted in death. A jail official confirmed Fields was being held there Saturday evening.

Or: Lorenz's reporting was legitimate, dude was terrified out of his mind after his car was being attacked, and it was a legit accident, BUT, the courts need to virtue signal and are giving him the highest sentence they think they can get him on.

that would be third degree murder then, but not second degree.
If this was all planned, then it should be first degree.
I can't get to a situation in which this was second degree murder.
