my understanding is that they arrived to a largely christian population driving the celtic christians out to wales, cornwall, and france, it's not like the saxons arrived in a vaccum or to an indigenous pagan population, the romans saw to that
to say they were completely independent is a bit misleading, it was an anglo-saxon king in kent which allowed the gregorian mission to stay and set up shop, and after the subsequent missions from irish-scottish missionaries and the kent's kings conversion to christianity it all but ensured the other anglo-saxon kings in the area to convert, this series of events and irish-scottish missionaries also probably led to the conversion of france too

I don't really think it's all that funny or surprising that christianity only really propagated quickly when the aristocracy converts, the saxons did bring back paganism but the romans had already done the damage, and it was ultimately the (anglo)-saxon kings that willingly converted to christianity over a generation or two that killed off paganism in britain for good with laws against devil worship and removing taxation of the church
