born in 92, i remember seeing my first video game when i was 5, used the internet when i was 7, and joined facebook when i was 14... i don't remember much of the world before it, but we were being set up to get used to it from the very start
>>
you could randomly show up at someones house and it was ok
kids would bike outside and go swimming and play hide and seek and play with waterballoons and super soakers all day.
you could hang out with 4-5 other people and play videogames or watch a movie
sometimes you would just walk around random places with friends
seeing a dog was really cool
talking about cartoons and comics with friends was fun
going to amusement parks or fun restaurants with arcades was a big deal
day dreaming was fun while watching trees blow in the wind through sunlight
videogame magazines were the shit
going to the movies was a big deal
getting chinese food was considered fun
going to a toy or electronics store was amazing
going to a book store was amazing
ordering pizza was a big deal

>>
>>137095457

You'd have to be about 50 to judge this objectively, ie: having experienced adult life before the late 90s.
>>
>>137095457

how young are you
>>
>>137095457
hugely underrated is that you could just be "out", basically alone, anonymous, with or without friends doing your thing and no one thought you were dead. now in addition to the professional and personal worlds going absolutely ape shit if you turn off your phone for a couple of days, if you go out youll inevitably end up in someones photo on social media. cell phones arent just accountability, its the fucking panopticon
>>
was good until facebook really caught on. Could be that a lot of my friends had kids around then and I broke up with my long term girl friend. I just liked that you could make plans with people and they kept them. Now it seems like everyone will cancel if something better comes up
>>
The internet was a fantastic place until "normal people" started using computers. This started to happen around -06. 07 is when the internet completely died.

I know you are, I just want you to defend why you think they're the same.
>>
>>137098674
You're delusional or retarded if you believe that. Women were just as narcissistic and cunty before Instashit and whatever, it just wasn't as readily visible and nobody believed you when you told them how cunty your gf was
>>
We talked to each other face to face, people only stayed home if they basically had no choice (sick, horrible blizzard ect) and we went around in groups visiting each others houses for various reasons.

Most of you mincing little fruits would not be curled up whining about how all women are evil, because you'd eventually end up with a few and see that it's no big deal.

I don't think there's anybody from any of my schools or any of my circle of friends who did not end up with somebody eventually.

Also this thing that kids do online where they think that acting like a cunt is funny in and of itself was not really a thing that happened often, because you could just reach over and hit somebody if they were being too retarded.

So the people who were known for being funny were usually actually pretty funny.

It was generally interesting to hang out with other people.
>>
TV was the "internet" of its time. we sat glued to the TV.
>>
Anyone that genuinely remembers doesn't take social media seriously.

I literally rode my bike everywhere just going to friend's houses and the whole goddamn neighborhood. You'd have to borrow vidya and shit. If girls liked you they had to fucking call the house and it'd be like "son there's a whore that wants to talk to you on the phone". My old pictures were literally brown version of me because I was in the sun all day. By nighttime curfew you would go home when the sun went down. I grew up in the pokemon era so it was more ridiculous with toys, cards, and trading pokemon in the vidya.
>>
It seems to me now that people are living their lives for others and absolutely every aspect of society is image based.
>>
>>137098154
We are especially fuck'd, Ante. We didn't get to live in the glorious years of Capitalism. We just suddenly woke up, few rich Jews showed up on our doors with bags full of promises for a brighter tomorrow.... and then we got THIS.
But seriously, I have no idea how to speak with the younger generation. They don't do any eye-contact. I am actually afraid to approach them, because it feels as if I am impudent.... They also seem to hold a great dislike of elder people and avoid them like plague.

>>
>people don't talk to each other
That's not the problem with social media. It's just that people's lives are pretty much public which puts more societal pressure on EVERYONE. This makes us more competitive and more distant from one another.
>>
>>137095457

Less degenerate... Half the shit on the internet would be completely shocking to me in the 90s. Now all sorts of degenerate shit is completely normal and acceptable unless youre a muslim or some other kind of religious fundamentalist.
>>
One aspect I don't think people ever really comment on is that it gave people the capacity to moan and complain and offer their opinion on shit, but also an infrastructure of people to pay them attention. I have nothing against articles, reviews, analysis, essays, etc. no matter the format) but this overtaking of the blog (no matter the format) really gets to me.

And even on /pol/ I see people partaking in and enforcing this with the YouTube "commentators" who would have never turned a single head if they were just another blog, offering their no-body opinion on events totally outside of their control or understanding.

While this always existed to an extent (BBS, Usenet, forums, etc. were rife with it) it never felt like this was "the point" of it all. On the web it always seemed that people had something more to express beyond "what I think of this thing that happened", whether they were expressing their love for some piece of media or even a researched analysis.

I'm not sure how to put it into few words, but I just think this lack of forethought and instant "content" creation has had a negative effect on discourse, because the one presenting a well-reasoned and research take on somthing will always be too late to the party compared to the guy rambling at a camera or pounding away at the keyboard.
>>
Born in "98 and had internet access for as long as I can remember and honestly a lot of what you guys are describing sounds fairly similar to early internet. Of course I only experienced it from the perspective of a kid but I can imagine it's entirely different for kids now growing up being exposed to social media early on. The most me and my friends used the internet for was flash games and listening to music on youtube and occasionally playing stuff like counter strike. You could go days without using it whereas now everyone has access to social media and instant contact on their person at basically all times an if you don't it's considered pretty weird. Anyone implying the internet has degraded society isn't wrong but it's more specifically the fact that companies realized how big of a marketing tool the internet is and how much money could be made off it that caused the problems, especially now that whoring yourself out to certain websites is considered a societal norm.

It also provided a common cultural experience, especially when there wasn't 3 billion channels. You could talk to someone and instantly have a topic to discuss by mentioning the evening news yesterday, or the talk show everyone watched, or the soap everyone was following, etc.

Lack of hyperproduction of course also meant higher general quality.

Gen X here.
In college in the 80s I had a list of phone numbers I kept in my wallet since I couldn't remember them. You'd tell people to meet you some place, and hope to god they showed up. If you were following someone to a party or something and lost them, you were SOL.
Your social media presence at that time was putting up a collage on your dorm room door or something.
>>
>>137104621
The internet isn't "human contact". It's an electronic box entertaining you. Sure, there might be other people entering data you're reacting to, but it isn't "human contact". You probably have as much real human contact now that youl would back then. Mostly family, sometimes coworkers, sometimes that one dysfunctional friend that's going to get you into trouble if you hang out with for too long. This shit we're doing now? This isn't "human contact". We might as well all be bots as far as your crazy ass is concerned.
>>
>>137104783
Everything is done through proxy. It's capitalism colonizing literally everything, when it can't expand outwards, it starts eating at aspects of humanity. Dating, socializing, communication, all through corporate tools. Public spaces? All private now, with specific rules and entry price. And so on.

It was nice. We were all less stressed out, because we didn't get doom and gloom from all over the world 24/7. We had hobbies. We called people, we visited, we wrote letters. We read books. We had hobbies. We didn't plow into each other on the road because someone is texting. We made up shit arguing, because we had no way to research anything. We'd get together at bars and BBQs and argue sports and politics, and leave still friends. We left the house.

Nope. They were somewhat balanced - each paper had it's own slant, usually coming from their Editor in Chief. The NYTimes has always been liberal. The SF Chronicle was somewhat conservative.

The closest you could get to the internet was the opinion/editorial/letters to the editor pages.

I remember when we were kids, we had to walk half the neighborhood to call the whole gang together.
We would spend the entire day outside playing football, only going home for like 4-5 hours while it was the hottest time of the day.
Playing football and chasing girls was the normal and usual part of the day.
The more rare pleasures included going to the arcades, spending hours there socializing with the lads and the big boys.
Going on "neighborhood adventures", where we would go to unexplored places in the neighborhood and do all sorts of shit there was like an adventure movie.
A person's parents taking the whole gang to the restaurant was a crazy adventure of it's own.
Life was way better and simpler back then, but I didn't know about the kikes back then...

You don't really get it, unless you lived in a time without internet and specifically smartphones. That atmosphere was different, being sociable everywhere you went was typical, literally no one was inattentive. If you wanted to go see someone, you would just walk down the street and knock on their door. I'm really thankful for having at least spent my childhood and teen years in a time before the internet was proliferated into everyone's pocket. Also, we had internet back then and it was much better - it was also more sociable, chatrooms were happening and people were friendly - now you can't even find a chatroom today because they are all shutdown, but everyone is a fag anyway.

Its strange how close to the truth this was in the 80s and 90s. Racism was downright taboo in the 90s and no one would dare say the dreaded "n-word" unless they were in a safe situation to do so, black people in entertainment wasnt even given a 2nd thought by anyone because it just seemed normal. I was going to USC at the time. (University of Southern California).

There were lots of niggers running around. It was the crest of the crack epidemic and every night we heard police helicopters flying overhead and the sound of gunfire and police sirens were all night long.

But before Rodney King you could go into one of those black BBQ places and nobody would bother you.

You could walk to the National History Museum with your friends to see some really cool stuff and not be terrified that someone was going to kill you when you got out.

All that changed (on purpose) when the swampers wanted to transform America. It was like a switch was turned on and everything went deadly overnight.

I had to transfer from USC to another University because it became far too dangerous to go there.

>We made up shit arguing, because we had no way to research anything
That's one of the vital things we're missing in todays world. You could spend hours talking and discussing shit because no one had a way to instantly end a discussion through google.
You had to actually develop verbal skills. Being a know it all gave you nothing if you had no way to push your point across.

So much social interaction is lost. Pile up all those questions you google, places to go, directions, time, all the arguments it settles. All those things that you don't even bother to bring up to discussion as you and other know the answer is right there.
Whenever you don't have a definite answer, imagination gets to play. modern kinds don't need to deal with uncertainty, they can just google this shit. By the time they hit stuff google can't answer they are in their teens and clueless how to proceed.

Sometimes when I'm sad or freaked out to the point of breakdown I re-create a pre-1995 weekend with my old family. I shut my cell phone off and leave it at home, I drive to Johnson City, TN, stop and buy some comic books at the store, rent a room at the Doubletree, go walk around the mall, play pinball, read comics, watch the TV, go swimming, and just stare out the hotel window. The things I do to keep from eating a bullet.

It was...come to think of it I was a hell raiser like most normal dudes living in a rural community with no girlfriend, being a virgin, not knowing what the fuck life is...you just did bad shit that was bad for other people and yourself.

Vandalism was probably the worst shit we would do. Nothing horrible like burning something down. But we used to fill up garbage cans with paper towels and light them on fire at school. Make waterballoons and throw them at teachers. We used to peep on senior highschool girls sun bathe with binoculars "...dude...shes so hot...i would totally let her give me a blow job..." "...yeasss...her boobs look squishy as hell..." "...i want to grab her ass..." "...man id totally make out with her right now...". You could imagine whatit was like to not regularly watch porn. Most nude magazines werelike playboy and scrambled porn late at night. Maybe youd see penetration for a split second. That was it.

spoken like someone who didn't live back then.

Growing up pre-internet was awesome. You went with friends into the parks and rode your bikes, played football, climbed trees and read books out on the front porch during the cool summer evenings and night.

You were gone all day during the summer. Nobody had cell phones so nobody could micromanage you like the helicopter moms do today.

Open pool during the summer at the local junior college. Great place to meet girls

You would go to the mall and spend all day there going ice skating, play mini golf, go see a movie, go to the arcade, go into the bookstores and see if you could sneak up and grab a copy of penthouse or playboy and "read" those though scientific America so if anyone saw you they didn't see you had some porn.

Stare at the hotties working at hot dog on a stick and tell them they were pretty. Watch their faces turn red and get embarrassed.

Things like that. It was a more innocent time. You couldn't say "call me" because the only phone you had was at home and you had to share that with mom, dad and family.
>>
>>137111103
I remember my first phone line, and having to decide what long distance company to get - and having to wait until later at night to call people outside of my area code, because it was cheaper.

Also - no answering machines. You let it ring, or tried later.
>>
>>137111103
What's with the fucking communism of having to dial a fucking area code first? I'm in 518 (NYS), and they just announced this bullshit and I have never heard of such a thing.

Unless it's long distance, you shouldn't have to dial that shit and waste your time, that's what computers in the Phone Co. are supposed to be for.

You also survived on your personality. You had to be sociable, freindly, and happy, not a depressed little shit. Granted, we were pretty happy - the country wasn't fucked up yet, and we could look forward to the future.
>>
>>137111852

Not to mention the wide array of feelings you went through as a male back then...

I remember going to the local fairgrounds and there was this kid there that was 18. I was 13. He came up to me and literally asked me if I wanted to fight. The rush of extreme fear, adrenaline and shame...do kids today even know what that feels like hiding behind their screens? That feeling of fizing my dirtbike after it broke down and ky dad patting me on the bacm and saying "hey son, good job you're a pretty handy guy...do you want a beer?" "W w w what d d dad...a f f full bbbbeer?" "You earned it" now kids dont even have a fucking dad or they dont even talk to him because he is too boring.
>>
>>137112927
Really? I thought it was may more like that back then because people say im way too nice and it looks really weak so they don't like me. I thought in the 80s and 90s with movies like Mad Max, you got all these action heros, you had to be a douchebag to be liekd.
>>
>you will never feel the joys of IRC again

>>137113045
My dad would sue the shit out of that 18 year old for picking a fight with a 13 year old. My dad sued my bully since he was a year old. He was 18 i was 17 since technically that's adult-minor violence.

Two piranhas lived in two different tanks. One day the piranhas wanted a big tank. The two piranhas were then put into the big tank along with a million other fishes. It was until a matter of time until they find each other, both with the thought that the other wanted to kill one. That's the internet summed up.
>>
>>137112331
Honestly if you ever watch an episode of "Friends" that's what captures the 90s really well. I'm not going to say it was perfect, but the atmosphere was a lot more friendlier out in public. Honestly if you watch Friends today it's a bit of a mild culture shock. You could be a little vulnerable and open about your insecurities without expecting someone to shit on you straight away. Today it's all about fucking over the guy on you're right and trying to prove something to everyone in the room. You don't behave in a vulnerable way, you don't show any insecurity, but you've also forgoing honest communication and everyone is fake.
>>
>>137112555
This. Even if it was just going over to your freind's house and hanging out in the basement, sneaking cigarettes and listening to albums, and talking about who the hottest girl at school was. If someone had a car, you'd have 12 guys show up to hang around with the hood open and talk engines. Go hang out in the park if you had a girlfriend, and make out on a picnic table, until it got dark. Someone was always having a party - you'd show up at someone's house you didn't know, and just hang out and meet people. Or you'd hang at home and listen to records or the radio, fuck around on a guitar, or drums. I spent a lot of nights in high school learning to draw band logos while listening to albums. (Great way to meet girls then - "Oh, you like Cheap Trick? I'll draw their logo on your notebook.") And then there were concerts, local bands playing battle of the bands shows, or playing at a party.
Nothing to do? That's funny. I was never busier than I was in high school and college. There was always something going on. Even if it was just going to the mall and hanging out in the record store, trying to meet girls. Hell, in the summertime, i was never home - being home meant hanging out with my parents, and I tried not to do that much. I loved them, but they were old.
>>
>>137111852
It's weird seeing people talk about the 90s, the way old people talked about the 50s back then.

Real douchebags were rare. You were a lot more dependent on other people. Be a douche and people are just going to ignore you, no cell phone to fall back to.
You got to know each other better, do stuff together, it's harder to be a real asshole in those circumstances.
>>
>>137113137

I think growing up through the 90's and early 00's was the best because we got a taste of everything from its infancy to what it is now. Plus we got all the classic outdoor lifestyle shit too. It was a good mix.

>>
>>137105316
It was better in the 80s, and you need bullies to keep the retards and assholes from acting up. Difference between irrational bullies and rational bullies is that rational bullies see the need to pick on you to make you drop the extra baggage that wouldve otherwise ostracized you from being sociable and making friends. You wonder why you have no friends because you never had a "big brother bully" type of figure in your life. Irrational bullies, bully just to see you squirm in pain, like every other control freak. Today's generation is full of pussies that literally lack a brain because they never use it. Fucking think man.
>>
>>137113137
No man, see >>137113839
What people say is "too nice" now was the norm back then because everyone was generally nicer. Today you have to put up walls and act a bit more rude because if you don't someone else will attack you. 80s action heroes were just a meme. "Friends" honestly captures what the 90s were like in my view. If I catch a rerun today, I'm like "fuuuck, we lost this. Honest connections. Showing how vulnerable you are, and people reciprocate by showing how vulnerable they are" it's like how people from decades ago say they lived in communities where they didn't lock the door. You can't get away with this in those same communities today. Keep everything locked up, from your property to your personality because you have to be on the defensive against the fucking typical normalized asshole of outside.

People look at me strangely when I show up without a phone, and then get all pissy because I expect them to talk to me. Always makes me laugh.
