The hubbub in North Korea is really about China.
Right now there is a conflict between India and China on their disputed border. China mobilized their troops to that area and there is a danger of escalation. However, if there is a danger of instability in Korea then China's priority is to move their attention to the opposite end of their country.

I don't think Kim Jung Un himself actually threatened. It is one of his generals or their state newspaper who has made the threats recently. I don't know if they are official statements.
