We're aren't, we're a republic. A democracy is "two wolves and a sheep arguing over what to have for dinner." It's mob rule, meaning that as long as you have a enough people to go along with something, it'll happen. Example: If there were 51% of men and 49% of women in America, and all men voted to legalize rape, women would be running scared by now.

A republic means that you vote for representatives to carry your concerns to the government, which is what we have in Congress and the Senate. Also, when it comes to voting, the Founders set up the Electoral College so that high population areas didn't dominate over the lesser populated areas. It provided a more fair and equal representation of all states regardless of their population.

Seriously, read an actual history book. I recommend the "Politically Incorrect Guide" series if you're not that much of a reader.
