You're playing it the wrong way. The game is specifically designed in such a way that you don't get to play a superhero who is good at everything without very extensive knowledge of the game. Playing hybrids is difficult; playing pure characters (i.e. pure fighter or pure talker) is much easier. It's meant to be played multiple times so you get to see all the content.

Difficulty largely depends on how you play. The combat is very unforgiving and you pretty much need to put the overwhelming majority of skillpoints into combat skills if you ever hope to take on groups of enemies. Combat is entirely optional though and the game can be completed without killing anyone. Hoi3 is intimidating as fuck. It doesn't help that whenever I try to watch YouTube tutorials it's always for an older version of the game so the UI and some of the gameplay options are changed/removed and most Lets Players always start by saying "the game doesn't know how to structure the military at all so we need to spend the first hour of the game swapping out every single one of our officers and command posts and shit".

My favorite use of games is actually their inherent ability to let players explore varying scenarios and their consequences freely. Nu-games don't let you do that anymore, it's all sjw garbage. As far as RTS is concerned, I was a big fan of the C&C and AoE series, but I feel like Rise of Nations is an overall better historical RTS. I don't play much RTS these days, but when I do, it's one of those games.

My favourite turn-based strategy games are Colonization and Galactic Civilizations II.

But over the past several years I've also gotten into grand strategy games like the OP. My favourite one is probably EU4. I'm waiting for Victoria III since it should have Linux support.

The presence of female warriors is just an aspect of the sword and sorcery genre, that was especially big in '80s and '90s fantasy series and RPGs. That's relevant up until Oblivion. I never got into PW though I knew people that liked it. I guess by the time it became popular I was sort of burned-out on M&B and was too lazy to sign up. That does sound pretty neat though. The devs for M&B are really sweet with their modding communities, by incorporating the best mods into actual DLC's (while a bit Jewy) allows them to actually implement the features properly, it would be great if they did the same with PW for Bannerlord.

While 400 is impressive it would be neat to have even larger server sizes

Trouble is when playing online if you know the meta and are half decent you can pick the counter army effectively until people start to pick up on it. Every faction finally has regiments of renown now which really spices things up and can lead to interesting armies without having to go lop sided on an army and gambling on the fact your enemy won't being its counter. Less losing from army composition and more reward for proper implantation and micro management.
