Oh, bullshit. All it would have taken to save the nation would have been to be reasonable, patient, and willing to compromise.

Remember how this went. Lincoln dishonestly ran on a platform of not freeing the slaves. The south seceded when it saw that this was dishonest, and they were being backed into a corner where they were being economically attacked would soon have to accept the slaves being freed. Lincoln declared that the slaves were free and they were going to war to free the slaves, so if the South rejoined peacefully, they would find their slaves freed and given full voting rights. And he also declared that this was punishment for seceding, and that he was still a sincere, honest politician who didn't want a war and had no agenda in relation to the slaves and was just doing what he could to preserve the union.

It was all just an excuse to tear down the rival power structure in the South, to the Northern industrialists/bankers.

Are you a complete idiot? With the North behaving as it was, nearly everybody in the South wanted a successful secession.

Sure, various outside powers had their own interests, but if anyone was pushing to cause the secession, they had to be doing it through Washington, D.C.

The South didn't just spontaneously decide to split off, they were acting to preserve themselves. Lincoln pushed and pushed to make the South a mere satellite of the North, and once things came to the brink, he declared that there would be no compromise and only abject surrender would be accepted, ensuring that the war would be a desperate fight to the last.

With the way Lincoln behaved, there was no avoiding a major war. He was by far the worst president until FDR.
