That's somewhat of an urban myth. No they aren't I promise. I have a nuclear family in a manner of speaking. My grandmother worked at Oakridge and my dad worked in the Minuteman silos in the 80's. I have personally seen a good chunk of the Nevada test site. Nukes are real.

Firstly, don't look at the flash.

If you're still alive after the actual blast goes off, you have around 30-40 minutes to get as far as fuck away (distance depends on yield of bomb) before all the radiation launched into the air comes back down.

If you live somewhere where you can get in your car and GTFO, do it, otherwise your best bet is to get either below ground, or 5+ stories above it.

If you drive away, once you're clear of the fallout, make sure your not downwind, (watch a single weather report and you'll see the general wind movement)

If you stay, fill a bathtub full of water and get enough canned food to last months - if you're in a group and you don't think supplies will last that long, murder them all in their sleep.

If you are caught unprepped in the inner city:

Lay down on the ground with your head in the opposite direction of the blast.
Cover all of your skin.
Close your eyes and put hands under your body.
Wait for a heat, two shock waves and after that you are safe to run to the nearest metro station/safe basement.

After two weeks after the blasts it's recommended to run to rural part of country.
