If It's common and likely so, It'd be pretty understandable, Incompetence to conceive Incompetence would be a likely quality of those who lack the intelligence to otherwise perceive biases or perhaps just humility.

It's also possible that ego being more prevalent in today's people is another cause of ignorance of someones self conflated traits. Whilst I'd say intelligence is more easily proven through accurate self assessment, It may also be measured by ones ability to not let their IQ get to there head.

Academic performance, I'm dyslexic and hated school, I was careless, never sore the point. But I did on occasion try to prove my abilities only to find I sucked, I never understood shit others did with ease, and It fucked me up as a kid.

I hated people seeing my stupidity, it made me feel out of control and destined for a horrid life. so I would be comfortable saying I would do anything to inflate my intellect around others. at first this would be classic DKE I'd get myself into arguments without any experience in reasoning, and learnt the hard way.

I've never read about Dunning-Kruger effect but I have thought a lot about this idea before. There are methods to test these things. There are people who score extremely high on them, but normal on other areas. People who tend to the extreme are ussually gifted in all but extreme in one.
Some tests factor in things like cognitive abilities from reading, others mathematics, others deal with spatial relationships and physics. Someone may be extreme in spatial relationships but only above average in math and cognitive, etc.

The point is some tests are far more thorough then others. Any decent test is usually several hours long, requires multiple portions, testing spatial ability, mathematics, reading comprehension, artistic ability, creative functioning.

If you have never sat down with a psychologist, one on one, and spent at least two hours doing the tests, you have never been properly tested.

I have a 73 IQ. I had it tested in high school because I wasn't able to learn like the other students. Bush II passed the no child left behind act, so I kept advancing grade levels, but I wasn't learning shit. Turns out I'm legally retarded. I don't have any mental disorders, and I don't look downsy or anything, but I'm really fucking dumb and unable to learn new things. They put me in as special class where I basically played with blocks all day. There were only 4 of us in the class, and the other 3 had downs syndrome. As for what I think about my intellectual capacity, I know I'm dumb, but I also know that if I work really hard I can do anything I want. I currently work at McDonald's where I clean the lobby. I can't figure out the cash register yet, but I bought a toy register with which to practice. I've only been there for 1 month, and I'm super confident that if I work really hard and practice for at least an hour every day, I will be on the register by September. Here is an aside you might find interesting: after I completed the test, I sat and waited while the guy conducting the test placed a plastic stencil over my answer sheet and tallied up the score. He declared that my result was 97. I was a little startled, as I had a ballpark figure in mind and it was not 97. He insisted that it was correct and I was almost at the point of accepting that it was true. It then occurred to him that he had three or four different stencils for different tests. Turned out that he had used the wrong one. He then used the right one and it came back at 151.

I found it a little unsettling that I was almost at the point of accepting that the 97 was legit. Perhaps an example of the DK corollary?

I find that most idiots eventually figure out they're not bright and go into any thought experiment with the presumption that they're not going to come to the correct awnser the first time working through a problem. Meanwhile it's not uncommon for genuinely smart people operate on the presumption that they're going to reach the correct conclusion automatically.

And don't misunderstand me, a genuinely intelligent person is more likley to come to the correct conclusion in most cases, however when you operate without a reasonable doubt in your abilities then any mistake you do make is less likley to get caught.

Honestly, anyone who wants to learn can learn. If anything, the teachers might not have been adequately equipped in order to meet yours learning needs. Actually learning things and not just regurgitating answers for a scantron isn't necessarily easy for everyone, and I think if the system had been suited to teach you how you needed to be taught you would've been fine.

That being said, you have a commendable attitude towards it in regards to the critical thinking stuff, and honestly that shit'll help you out a lot more than having a high IQ and no motivation.
