As someone who used to work in Silicon Valley at a company very similar to Google in size and stature, the only way to destroy them is by not only causing descent internally, but also looking publicly ruining its prestige and reputation so prospective employees decide not to join the organization. Once the actual talent leaves, i.e. the software engineers, the designers, hr, legal, management, etc. won't be able to keep the ship afloat. It's a long fight, but a precedent has been set by the firing of James Damour; logical folks won't stand for it.

Microsoft has had a reputation of being evil for some time now and it's still going strong. Google really needs to be hit in the pocket book and its bottom line damaged to affect it IMO.

Also bay area employee. This is correct. Even small companies are very sensitive towards their image and reputation is insane. It's rarely about that actual product anymore but just the idea of looking good.
