This is a high profile case with multiple violent felonies. This will be continued and a deal or trial will be made by early next year at the earliest (most likely in march or April imo). If this was a small misdemeanor maybe it would only be pushed back a 3-4 months before a deal is made. These monthly appearances are basically check ins and ways to catch someone fucking up and usually don't present new facts in court and is usually a time when the lawyers talk in a private room about the case

If anything I feel it would allow him to get a lighter sentence, independent of the venue. Can't argue the facts of the case but don't expect harsh punishment. If he was my client I would argue his university positions put him as a great use to society and I would go for minimum incarceration if any with probation. Which I believe is very possible.

A few reasons for a postponement could be Clanton needs to get more witnesses, Clanton is getting a new lawyer, or Clanton needs to deal with too much negative publicity. The only real reason that the prosecution would get a delay is if their work load is too much and they simply couldn't attend the preliminary today.

Like I said, this is the preliminary. So the only goal of the prosecution is to go in there and show some of it to the judge. They don't have to prove beyond a doubt that it's Eric Clanton, they just have to cast suspicion that it could possibly be him. The judge will look at the evidence presented, and he will listen to the witnesses talk. Then the judge will either go "hey this is some stupid bullshit, I'm throwing it out" or he'll say "hey, looks like you may have something here, I'll send this to a jury trial". These usually last about a half hour. There's no jury at these, there's no arguing over the evidence itself, just showing how much evidence there actually is and whether or not it could possibly be Clanton.

Now if the judge does say that the prosecution has enough and sends it to a jury trial, then they'll most likely offer Clanton a deal. Like I said, most cases do not make it to a jury trial, so chances are very high that it'll end right here. The defense would be shown some of what the prosecution has and realize that they are fucked, and accept. Or they won't, then a jury trial will be scheduled and that's when the real shit starts. Then the prosecution has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that this actually is Eric Clanton to a jury.
