Whenever a nation fails to have coherent vision of the future, it falls back to whatever "worked in the past'.

Say, Weimar republic was having a rough time and decided to go back to the "good old times" ("kinder küche kirche" for women and all that). And we all know how well that ended.

In our case we got back to "get more land, land is profitable" even though in the current age of welfare state extra land and citizens are actually a net DRAG on economy if the region is poorly developed.

That's was not due to some strategic importance or whatever, it was just that there was a desire to do SOMETHING and moving forward was on on the list for numerous reasons.

It was conquered by Russia, major cities were founded and built the way they are today by Russia. Same as the rest south-east of Ukraine.
And Crimea is majority Russian and they are perfectly happy to be part of Russia. Just because some commie decided to gift it to Ukraine - doesn't mean anything. Soviets were agents financed by foreign countries and they came to power through illegal coup. They are not legitimate and so are all their decisions.

Maybe so, but it's mostly the fault of communism. And Ukraine is even worse. Much more was done during the last three years than during the whole time Crimea was part of Ukraine.
I have an aunt and grandparents there. They live in villages literally in the middle of nowhere. And even there you can see an improvement. Garbage collectors started coming to collect trash. The roads were fixed, the village centers and schools were repaired. Water pipelines were built and gasification was started. There are a lot of seniors living in those villages and they had to keep a lot of livestock and greenhouses for a living, because pensions were like 60-80$ in Ukraine. But now most of them sold everything, because pension is enough. And young people go to cities to work, because there are more jobs now.
Ukraine just doesn't deserve it. It should be split up between Russia, Poland, Hungary and Romania.

Give it back to what? Half of Ukraine already defected to Russia. Way better than being governed by Nulandistan or Haleyville
