They bring you in, and any witnesses or victims, and the police will show the evidence that they have. Then the witnesses speak about what happened. Then the defendant's lawyer will say some shit. The judge will decide right there what charges to throw out and which to keep based on how much evidence is presented. It's not arguing over the evidence itself, but just seeing if there's even enough to go to a trial with. They can also offer a plea deal there as well.

Yes, he pleaded not guilty when bail was set. Now it's the preliminary. This is the big day, because since 90% of cases end before trial, it could end on this day.

A preliminary trial takes about a half hour. There is no jury, just the judge. The prosecution presents it's evidence and their witnesses. A judge will review and make two decisions right there: is there enough proof presented to show that a crime was in fact committed? If yes, then is there enough probable cause to show that the defendant is the one who committed said crime.

Right here one of three things happen after the judge reviews all evidence and listens to everyone speak.
>The judge looks at everything and decides that there isn't enough evidence to go forth with a trial, then everything (or some charges) is thrown out
>The judge says there is enough to move forward with a trial
>The judge says there is enough to move forward with a trial and the defense realizes that they are fucked, so they accept a plea

Now like I said, 90% of court cases end before the trial even begins. So chances are VERY high that this half hour hearing is going to be the end of it and we'll find out if he's guilty or innocent.

Also, the standards of burden of proof for a preliminary are much lower than that of the actual jury trial. They don't need to prove that he's 100% guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The only thing the prosecution has to do is show that there is a suspicion that the defendant did these crimes. Again not actually prove it's him beyond a shadow of a doubt, just make the judge go "hmm, you COULD have done it, I'll send it to a trial and let a jury decide".

With his prior conviction getting arrested blocking traffic at a BLM protest, and the police finding him taking selfies in black garb and posting all sorts Antifa bullshit online, I'd say they can cast suspicion on him.

If the judge agrees, then it's sent to trial where the prosecution really has to ramp it up and prove to a jury that he is the one behind the black mask striking people. If the judge just isn't buying that it could be him, maybe even just a little bit, it'll be thrown out and Clanton walks free right there.

The hearing should only take a half hour, usually. Who knows, but I doubt that the judge or prosecution asked for the postponement. There's plenty of reasons the defense would ask for a postponement, and usually a judge is reluctant to grant one, especially in California where they like to move criminal cases along rather fast.

A few reasons the defense might ask for a postponement could be he getting another lawyer, trying to find witnesses for him, or dealing with adverse pre-trail publicity. Since the last one is obviously an issue for Clanton, that could be the reason.

Someone did say Yvette Felarca's trial is today as well, and this is also another reason they could postpone it. The prosecution is simply too busy to handle Clanton today. California doesn't like delaying this shit though.
