that's a good point, though perhaps there are some specific reasons for it in our case. the Aussie population is especially centralised in its cities compared to practically every other country on earth. city people care far less about guns than rural people, so a much greater proportion of the Australian population would be akin to that liberal type of city dwelling American that is currently arguing for increased gun regulation, while the rural Americans are staunchly against any legislation whatsoever.

the other consideration would be that guns are as much of a responsibility as they are a right. while voting ought to be considered a responsibility i don't think modern western populations perceive them in that way, but sees voting moreso as a means of getting what they want. so while guns are something that you must bear, voting is a means of getting what you want.

also note that losing guns came after women were given the right to vote, women being far less keen on guns than men.

so the two things arent analogous exactly. Australia losing its guns was the result of a weakened population but with a very successful propaganda campaign. i can't see the same happening for taking away women's suffrage anywhere in the west, short of a totalitarian state taking hold after some kind of civil unrest.

This is why I'm not advocating taking away women's suffrage as a realistic policy proposal. Raising the voting can be argued on scientific grounds, and doesn't discriminate against any groups protected in identity politics. If it can begin there, then it's much more likely that someone, at a later point, could gain support for voting licenses based on objective criteria such as I and/or political literacy tests.
