Emotional dishonesty is absolutely entrenched in all modern societies and you can't single it out as just Japanese.

As someone who worked in China in the past, their culture is impressive. They all save money, family is the first priority. Divorce rates are low, marriage and birth rates are high. Porn is illegal, the internet is restricted so youth aren't caught in traps like this one. I think the only thing that they need to improve is how easy it is to bribe to get what you want, either buying meals or gifts, just handing over cash, or using "guanxi" the complicated social currency.
