If you believe that Rome was a part of Western Civ then the decline of the Church does not mean the decline of Western Civ, in fact, since to credit the church so much simply for preserving the classical world through monasteries, the Roman Church and the classical education, etc, you are stringing a golden thread through our history connecting ourselves to the classical world. If you don't believe Rome was a part of Western civ then the existence of the pre-christian classical civs is evidence for the possibility of post-christian civs. In both cases, whether you include or exclude Rome into Western civ, the "decline" of Christianity is not something that should alarm you.

Western Civilisation is a Mediterranean phenomenon, including Greece, Rome, "the East", Carthage, and so on. Western civ is not a product of the Church, the Church is a product of Western Civ--- which is an ethno-cultural phenomena.

The premise of Protestantism has been proven incorrect.

When Protestantism first came about, they asserted that the Catholic Church was a corruption of early Christianity and the Council of Nicea added paganism to the Church. And that the only way to be more like the early Christians was to glean how they acted by studying only the Bible.

This was a very believable premise bacck in the 1500s. Nobody new anything about the early Christians then.

But recent advances in archaelogy and history has led us to understand the early Christians better. And as it turns out, the Catholic Church did a pretty good job of preserving those traditions.

Now we know that the early Christians venerated Mary, believed in intercessory prayer, believed in the real presence in the Eucharist, worshipped on Sunday, prayed for the dead, had a heirarchy of Bishops etc

Those aren't "pagan inventions". They were doctrines and practices held by the apostolic fathers. So really, for all its faults, the Catholic Church is the religion closest to the religion of the apostles.

The fundemental premise of Protestantism has been disproven.
It is time to come home.
