Primarily they want security and permanence for the Kim Dynasty, everyone in the inner circle of pyongyang values their lives and the wealth and power they enjoy under the Kims.
Secondarily they want to be a part of the global discussion, to be be treated like other countries and allowed to trade and grow on their own terms.
It's not that insane to be honest, we act like they are somehow globally unique, they are far from it.
There is no doubt that while the selfish autocracy of the Kim regime contributes to the suffering of it's people, equal or more damage is done by refusing them trade and the wealth it would bring.
The west loves it's rhetoric of "WE CANNOT TOLERATE A MONARCHIC DICTATOR blah blah noise", but thats patently untrue,We tolerate other monarchies; Oman, Suadi Arabia, Swaziland, many of these countries are considered allies despite numerous human rights violations and utter corruption.

If you want a serious answer then they believe in a modified form of Christianity where they replace Jesus Christ with Kim Il Sung and stories about him are like their gospel. It's one reason why they are so hard on Christianity, because they used it as the template for their religion. He is basically their god and the Kim dynasty is worshiped kind of like the emperor worship of ancient Rome. The leader lives in luxury doing whatever, and I mean whatever they want while the rest of the country eats potatoes and hopes to make it through another year without their neighbor ratting them out to their local Political Commissar, which means torture, forced labor camps and probable death. They are not allowed any internet access and even having a radio or TV tuned to South Korea could mean death. You are literally afraid of your own children because they are indoctrinated at school to turn you in. Kinda like how they want to start indoctrinating our children to report you for hate crimes violations. But this country is the extreme LEFT where no one matters only Kim's country and they will sacrifice you on the alter to emperor Kim's ambition. He's got like a harem of teen girls that are chosen during middle school and trained to please him, then when they get to old like 20's or 30 he gives them as wives to soldiers as rewards. I could go on, like the fake store fronts and tours for tourists, but that place is messed up, just look at a picture of it at night from space.

Kim is in catch 22. His power in the country relies on the fact that half the population there at least believe he deserves respect because of birthright and that the US has been their main enemy. Kim needs to build his arsenal to show his balls and they have been promising to strike the US for years. If he succumbs to any countries, especially the US, by backing down and not attacking, he looks weak to his people.

People create myths around much-beloved patriotic heroes. They don't think that Kim Il Sung "created the world" but whatever.

In very simple terms, today you only have 3 effective ideologies.

1) Global Capitalism --- Americas, West, China, Japan, India --- almost all the world is included in this... and this will lead to a Technological Singularity sooner or later. Humans will be superseded by AI which will then become the next step of the evolution.

2) North Korean "Human-centered ideology"--- this is a resistance to number 1 in a way --- Juche teaches that HUMAN is always number one and technology/instruments of humans should never lord over human beings... it's an extreme anthropocentrism
