In the DSM-IV, "Alcohol Dependence" and "Alcohol Abuse" were two distinct disorders - the former dealing more with physical dependency and accompanying symptoms, the latter with behaviors like obsession and compulsion despite negative consequences.

In the DSM-5, however, they've merged them into "Alcohol Use Disorder" which means people who have shit decision making skills around drinking and people who wind up physically addicted due to self-medicating depression or whatever get the same diagnosis. It's bullshit.

Also I hardly see the point of this discussion, history has proved time and time again that restricting access to alcohol does absolutely nothing to quell the need for it on its own. I finally stopped back in January. I was pretty much the definition of alcoholic. Weigh 135 lbs and was drinking a liter of whiskey or vodka a day. Some how made it with out doing a stint in rehab. I did some court ordered AA quite a few years ago, and maybe I'm a little biased because of the resentment. 1) No, they do pretty much the exact opposite. It was created to address the underlying issues that cause alcoholics to return to drinking despite consequences - the underlying issues basically being you. One of the founders was a doctor who worked with alcoholics undergoing medical detox and couldn't understand why they'd show back up just as bad if not worse within a month. There's a major emphasis on taking responsibility for your own behaviors, which is why they emphasize "taking a moral inventory" of your past and making amends to anyone and everyone you've fucked over, regardless of what they did to you.

2) Fuck no, they never talk about Jesus - I've known people who did, and they'd be politely asked to lay off or find a different group. There is the concept of a "higher power" or "God" but there are tons of atheists in AA - myself included. It's just used as a shorthand for recognizing that you aren't King Shit of the Universe and there are things bigger than yourself that you can't control. That's it. People in AA are actually extremely adamant that it not go any further than that and stray into ideas about religion/spirituality.

One of the drawbacks of AA is that its language is very dated. They still stick to the same terms they were using when it started in the 1930s. They'll refer to alcoholism as an "allergy" in the literature at times, for example - "allergy" having been a fairly new concept at the time that basically referred to having an abnormal physical reaction to exposure to foreign substances.

Everyone totally does the "I'm Bill and I'm an alcoholic" - "Hi Bill," thing. That's about the only detail movies and TV get right.

AA is super weird, but I recommend it to anyone struggling to stop using. It's not like joining Scientology or some shit.
